My happy place is the beach

It’s a sentiment my entire family shares. In fact, every one of us has that simple phrase, "My Happy Place is the Beach," displayed somewhere in our homes. It’s more than a quote — it’s a reflection of our bond, rooted in the breathtaking beauty of our island home, Jamaica. The memories of waves lapping at the shore, the laughter carried on the ocean breeze, and the feeling of peace that only the beach can bring are woven into our hearts.
When I moved to the United States, I took those memories with me. I worked my way through college and built a career as an engineer within the materials industry. As I delved deeper into the world of plastics, I came to understand its incredible benefits. This material has revolutionized the way we live, making possible everything from life-saving medical devices to the everyday conveniences we often take for granted. But with this innovation came a sobering realization: we have a responsibility—a duty—to ensure that this versatile material doesn’t harm the very planet we call home, especially our oceans, which cover 70% of the Earth’s surface.
The challenge we face is a delicate one: how do we protect our planet while still utilizing the resources that have become integral to modern life? It’s not enough to focus only on recycling after a product has been used. True sustainability begins long before that, during the entire life cycle of plastics, from before the sale, to production, to disposal. It’s about being mindful from the start.
This belief became the driving force behind ComOpps. I wanted to be part of the solution to sustainability. Working closely with my team and SMEs in the plastics industry, we developed a solution that focuses on business efficiency that contributes to environmental responsibility. We asked ourselves an important question: How can we ensure that our customers have the information they need to make choices that benefit both their businesses and the planet?
It’s all about balance. We believe that with the right tools, we can empower the plastic materials industry with better data for responsible innovation and sustainable success to protect our environment and ensure that our happy places—those sacred spaces like the oceans and the beaches—remain safe for generations to come. Because in the end, we all want our children, and their children, to have the opportunity to experience the same joy we found in those peaceful moments by the clean ocean.
